Superman is the most celebrated superhero of all time. Nicknamed the Man-of-Steel, Superman was first published in 1932 by DC Comics and has enjoyed unmatched popularity for nearly 80 years. Superman was born on the planet Krypton before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father just moments before the planet exploded. Discovered and adopted by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child was raised as Clark Kent. As an infant he started to display superhuman abilities, which upon reaching maturity he resolved to use for the benefit of humanity. Superman's only weakness comes from exposure to a material known as Kryptonite which his adversaries, particularly arch-enemy Lex Luthor, use to try to destroy him. Originally a DC Comic book hero, Superman has been the star of numerous movies, TV and radio programs, animated cartoons, newspaper strips, and video games. Superman's appearance is distinctive and iconic: a blue and red costume, complete with cape and stylized "S" insignia on his chest.
